The Nexus takes a short break…
I’m on holiday this week in New York so my ear isn’t as close to the ground as usual. With that in mind, ediotrial is light but for those hungry for data points, here’s a news roundup from my market scanner.
The Nexus — Month in Tax Tech: Mid Sep – Mid Oct 2026
Sovos bought twice in 16 days, Avalara shipped its agent hub, and Numeral raised the month’s biggest round. The common thread: the tax engine is no longer the product. The workflow around it is — and everyone is now buying, building or rebranding to own it.
Mandate and legislative news is left out; this is vendors only.
Deals
Sovos set the pace: two acquisitions that move it from tax engine to finance-ops platform.
Sovos buys Blue dot (15 Sep). The Tel Aviv VAT intelligence and recovery platform cleans and classifies T&E and AP spend data; it serves hundreds of enterprise customers and is an SAP Concur endorsed app. Its data science team joins Sovos product. Terms undisclosed. Sovos
Sovos buys Flowie (1 Oct). Paris-based agentic finance orchestration across AP, P2P, AR, contracts and supplier onboarding. Sovos now pitches a “Compliant Finance Platform” with a new “Sovos Graph” layer. Blue dot diagnoses, Flowie acts — Sovos is trying to leave the engine category before agents commoditise it. Sovos
Numeral raises $100M Series C (23 Sep). Led by Insight Partners with Salesforce Ventures; $157M raised in total; 3,500+ customers; transaction volume up 327% year on year. Two weeks later CEO Sam Ross said the business had more than tripled and was nearing 4,000 paying customers. The managed-compliance model now has growth-equity validation. Numeral · Yahoo Finance
Ryan buys Comtax (5 Oct). São Paulo tax-tech and SAP/Oracle tax-engine implementation shop, ~70 staff, Ryan’s first Brazil presence. Brazil’s CBS/IBS reform makes implementation capacity the scarce asset. International Tax Review
Basware closes Trustpair (5 Oct). Paris payment-fraud prevention, signed 26 Aug; Basware’s fourth deal in three years after Glantus, AP Matching and Redmap. E-invoicing networks are turning into invoice-to-payment assurance platforms. PR Newswire
Andersen keeps rolling up (5–7 Oct). Completed the UK Andersen Tax Ltd deal and added firms in Italy, the Netherlands and South Africa: 19 deals worth ~$190m of annual revenue in 2026. A network consolidation play, not tax tech — yet. Yahoo Finance
Comarch carve-up? (5 Oct, unconfirmed). Kraków press reports CVC has sold the public-sector, healthcare-IT and asset-management units; Comarch hasn’t confirmed. The question is whether the EDI/e-invoicing business is next on the block. LoveKraków
Agents everywhere
Every incumbent shipped agents this month. Only one published usage numbers.
Avalara Aviator (23 Sep, GA after CRUSH Europe). An agent hub fronted by an orchestrator agent, “Avi”, directing lead agents for research, certificates and returns: it maps products to tax codes, validates exemption certificates and drafts custom rules, simulating each on past transactions before a human approves. Free to existing customers at launch. At CRUSH Europe (8 Oct) Avalara added Versori, its agentic integration layer, and cited 54bn+ AvaTax API calls a year. Giving it away is a retention play ahead of any IPO. Avalara · CRUSH Europe
Thomson Reuters puts CoCounsel into indirect compliance (1 Oct). ONESOURCE Indirect Compliance R2026.10 is now “powered by CoCounsel” and adds Hungary eÁFA generation and submission. CoCounsel moving from legal and pro tax into the corporate filing workflow is the bigger signal. Release notes
Wolters Kluwer ships agents into the preparer seat. TaxWise now sorts client documents, maps data and drafts review-ready returns, with the preparer signing off each one (5 Oct). In Italy, Genya added conversational AI and automated bank reconciliation (13 Oct), and WK disclosed ~2,500 firms asked ~50,000 questions of its Expert AI in 60 days. That’s the adoption proof the rest of the market isn’t publishing. TaxWise · Genya
Taxually goes platform (12 Oct). New e-invoicing and tax-calculation products launched at Taxually Connect, with APIs that plug into clients’ own AI, and a claimed ~40% growth in active clients. The VAT-filing specialist now competes with Fonoa, Avalara and Marosa on more than compliance services. Business Wire
Intuit takes its agents abroad (14 Oct). Intuit Intelligence is now live outside the US in QuickBooks Online, including autonomous invoicing, after a JKR corporate rebrand built around it (6 Oct). Autonomous invoicing in QBO UK is exactly where e-invoicing compliance will need to plug in — build or partner is the question for the SMB tax vendors living off QuickBooks distribution. MarketScreener · Fast Company
Channel and partnerships
The quieter story: vendors are scaling through SIs and vertical partners rather than direct sales.
PwC Belgium deepens its Avalara alliance (8 Oct) across AvaTax, E-Invoicing & Live Reporting and VAT Reporting on SAP, Oracle, D365, Workday, Basware and IFS. Avalara’s Europe push runs through implementation partners. PwC Belgium
Taxwire teams up with Cudio (7 Oct), a Boston Odoo Gold Partner: Cudio does Odoo setup, Taxwire does calculation, certificates, nexus and managed filings. Mid-market ERP via SI partners is the open lane for challengers. MarketersMedia
Otelier builds a two-way Avalara for Hospitality integration (13 Oct) for hotel sales and lodging tax, flagging mismatches between Avalara’s rates and the hotel’s PMS. Small, but another vertical partner building on Avalara. Lodging Magazine
Sovos becomes a direct certified e-invoicing provider in Greece (5 Oct), accredited by AADE. Sovos
Big 4 and advisory
The firms are drifting into vendor territory, and their tax data security just became a procurement question.
Deloitte appoints its first Tax chief product officer (12 Oct). Chris Puglia plans heavy investment in tech assets and possibly products clients can license, while saying Deloitte isn’t becoming a software company “overnight”. Alliance partners should read that as “eventually”. Accounting Today
EY tax client data leaked via a third-party helpdesk platform (6 Oct). Support tickets on an IT service-management tool behind EY tax services exposed client tax data for Goldman Sachs wealth-management and Man Group clients. Andersen disclosed its own phishing incident the same day. The exposure wasn’t in the tax engine — it was in support tooling. FT · Andersen
EY’s tax line outgrew the firm (8–9 Oct). FY to June 2026: global revenue +4.7% to $57bn; tax +6.0% to $13.8bn. Accounting Today
Law firms build tax-tech practices. Spain’s Ecija opened a Tax Innovation unit in Madrid, led by María del Carmen González de Luis from PwC Tax & Legal. A small new implementation channel. Iberian Lawyer
People, markets and analysts
IDC’s e-invoicing MarketScape crowns three Leaders in four days. Thomson Reuters (14 Sep), Avalara (15 Sep) and Sovos (17 Sep) each announced Leader placement in IDC’s Worldwide Compliant e-Invoicing 2026 assessment. When everyone is a Leader, buyers will go back to asking for live-mandate references. Thomson Reuters · Avalara · Sovos
Vertex adds DataRobot CEO Debanjan Saha to its board (1 Oct) to back its “AI-first” transformation. Vertex
Intuit’s long holders get nervous. Lindsell Train’s Q3 letter cut its growth expectation to ~10% from 15%, citing DIY-tax competition and AI risk to entry-level products; INTU closed at $305.99 on 12 Oct, down ~54% YTD. Yahoo Finance
Banqup hits a 52-week low (7 Oct), down 9.6% to €1.75 with no stated catalyst. ad-hoc-news
What to watch
Q3 earnings will test whether any of the agent talk shows up in numbers.

Now onto the second part of the VAT vendor market analysis, where we dive deeper into customer profile fit, customer and employee sentiment and what to do about it all.
🌍 VAT Vendor Market Comparison (Part 2)
Fit Beats Features. Silence Is a Signal.
Part 1 ranked thirteen VAT specialists and ran them through four buyer lenses. Part 2 is the shortlist work: who’s built for your business model and size, what customers and employees actually say, and the diligence this tier demands.
A score tells you what a vendor can do. Fit tells you whether it’ll do it for you, at your size, at a price and service level that holds up. In this tier, the gap between the two is where most bad selections happen.
Fit is lopsided by design
Published business-model and size-band fit (0 = Poor, 3 = Strong). Rows sorted by overall score.
Twelve of thirteen vendors rate Strong for at least one business model, so everyone has a sweet spot. The gaps are what matter:
B2B goods: Marosa and Cygnet One lead on breadth, but probe for geo coverage on the latter. Meridian and Taxmarc are the answer when SAP is the system of record, and Pincvision when EPR and customs sit alongside VAT. Nobody covers SAP-native determination, CTC and EPR together, so expect a two-vendor stack.
B2C goods: AVASK, Taxually and Lovat are all Strong, and none of them has e-invoicing. That matters the moment a seller crosses into B2B and domestic sales in a mandate country.
Digital services: only Fonoa, Quaderno and Lovat are Strong. Everyone else can file for a digital business but wasn’t built around one.
Non-digital services: only VAT IT and Fintua are Strong, because both turn reclaim on travel and supplier spend into an argument that can fund the compliance bill.
Size fit runs in opposite directions. The self-serve vendors (Lovat, Quaderno, Taxually, AVASK) are strongest at Small and weaken as buyers get bigger. The SAP and services vendors (Meridian, Taxmarc, VAT IT, Pincvision) are strongest at Large and effectively unavailable at Small. Eight vendors are Patchy or Poor at Small: half this tier has no small-business motion at all.
Medium is the knife fight. Fonoa, Marosa, Cygnet One and AVASK all rate Strong, and they barely overlap by business model, so choose on that first. At Large, VAT IT is the only vendor that combines enterprise-grade certification, global managed filing and e-invoicing. Meridian and Taxmarc are Strong only where SAP is the ERP of record, and both carry small-vendor continuity risk.
Customers: the problem is silence
Independent review evidence by platform. Bubble size scales with review volume; hollow markers mean fewer than 15 reviews.
Four of thirteen vendors have no independent review-platform presence at all: Pincvision, Cygnet One, Taxmarc and Taxera. That includes a Pacesetter. Fintua has Vodafone and Brambles on its reference list and six G2 reviews (4.7), all on Comply: a positive start, not yet a sample. If procurement gates shortlists on G2, half this market is invisible.
Where reviews exist, they’re strongly positive:
Lovat: G2 4.9 on 138 reviews, GetApp 4.7 and a split Trustpilot at 4.2, the most consistent multi-platform signal in the tier.
Fonoa: G2 4.5 (34) and Gartner Peer Insights 4.6 (19), the strongest enterprise signal, with API quality and onboarding the dominant themes.
AVASK: the largest sample, around 1,000 Trustpilot reviews at 4.0, with knowledgeable account managers set against slow response times.
Taxually: 4.5+ on 327 Trustpilot reviews; price and ease are praised, while complex registrations are slow.
Marosa: 4.4–4.5 across G2 and Trustpilot, a professional team set against delivery timeliness on new VAT set-ups.
The pattern is consistent. Services-heavy vendors get their best and worst reviews from the same place: knowledgeable, human support on one side, registration turnaround and pricing-scope surprises on the other. That isn’t noise. It’s the delivery model showing through.
Employees: the early warning system
Glassdoor overall and sub-scores. Light bars = fewer than 15 reviews.
When much of the product is people, employer health predicts service quality. Burn out the registration team this year and you’ll read about it on Trustpilot next year.
Fonoa: Glassdoor 4.4 (54), every sub-score at 4.0 or above. But RepVue shows roughly 24% quota attainment against a median near 43%, plus churn in sales leadership. The product looks built to last; the account team may not be.
Cygnet One: 3.6 on 493 reviews, the best-evidenced score in the tier.
Marosa: 3.6, with work-life at 2.7, which lines up with its delivery-timeliness complaints.
AVASK: 3.2 (82), with micromanagement and workload themes that echo its Trustpilot turnaround complaints.
Meridian and VAT IT: compensation scores of 2.0 and 2.4, the signals most likely to show up as account-team churn.
Lovat, Quaderno, Taxmarc, Taxera: too little data. With teams of 15–40, judge bench depth from headcount.
The rule: where a vendor’s compensation score sits below 2.5, assume your account manager changes mid-contract, and write named contacts and/or escalation paths into the agreement.
Pricing: two commercial worlds
Self-serve vendors publish prices and compete on them; services-led vendors quote everything and compete on outcome. Only Lovat and Quaderno publish a full tier list, AVASK and Cygnet One publish an entry price, and seven are quote-only. Quaderno is the transparency benchmark: $49, $99 and $149 a month by transaction band.
The real risk isn’t the headline price. It’s the add-on layer: registrations, fiscal representation, EPR and consultancy priced outside the subscription and discovered on the invoice. The most interesting model belongs to Fintua and VAT IT, where contingency-fee reclaim can fund some or all of the compliance bill. If you have material travel, AP or event spend, model net cost, not list price.
If you’re X, do Y
If you’re a large SAP-centric multinational with complex EU B2B goods flows, start with Meridian for SAP-native determination plus filing. Choose Taxmarc if chain-transaction accuracy and real-time posting controls are the problem. Add Pincvision for EPR and customs, and settle early who owns the CTC interface.
If you want EU or global compliance and reclaim outsourced, VAT IT is the broadest platform here. Fintua wins where reclaim volume funds the bill and you don’t need calculation. Get a written three-year all-in price.
If you’re mid-market and facing French, Polish, German or Belgian mandates, Marosa has the schema-level country modules; contract with the Wolters Kluwer roadmap in mind. VAT IT (via eezi) is the managed alternative and Fonoa the API-first one.
If you’re a digital platform or SaaS business, Fonoa is built for you. Ask when PwC’s Edge reporting will run on its core platform. Below roughly €50M revenue on Stripe or Shopify, Quaderno is the lighter answer.
If you’re a marketplace seller needing VAT, OSS and EPR, AVASK has the breadth, Taxually wins on price and Lovat fits the smallest sellers. Get registration turnaround in writing.
If you’re India- or GCC-heavy, Cygnet One. Just don’t expect it to cover EU SAF-T.
If your vendor has just been acquired, don’t re-platform on the announcement. Ask for written commitments on pricing, support and data portability within 90 days, and benchmark one alternative so the conversation has leverage.
Diligence that’s non-negotiable in this tier:
Two or three reference calls with customers the vendor didn’t hand-pick, at your size and in your segment.
Certificates, audit scope, data residency and an uptime commitment as pass/fail items. Only four vendors publish a SOC 2 Type II, and nobody publishes an uptime SLA.
A country-by-regime matrix with live customers per country, before you trust any “111 countries” headline.
Every add-on in writing (registrations, fiscal representation, EPR, consultancy rates) with a cap on renewal uplift. Seven of thirteen vendors are quote-only.
For anyone filing on your behalf: who holds your digital certificates and powers of attorney, and how they’re revoked when you leave.
For prospective employees
Product and engineering: Fonoa is the standout employer brand in the tier, now with a fresh $110M behind it. Sales roles there carry real quota risk.
Stability: Cygnet One has the largest, steadiest sample. Ask how many people work on indirect tax specifically.
Domain depth over pay: Meridian and VAT IT offer serious technical work, but compensation is their weakest signal, so negotiate it up front.
Small vendors (Lovat, Quaderno, Taxmarc): you’ll be the bench. Given the consolidation in this tier, ask about ownership plans before you sign.
The landing
Most buyers in this tier will end up running two vendors: a compliance layer plus an e-invoicing or managed-service layer. The hand-off between them is where projects fail.
So don’t pick a champion. Pick a pair, and test the hand-off before you sign.

MONTH — OCTOBER 2026
Market Consolidation, Live Mandates, Post-Filing Pillar Two & Synthesis
October is the most event-dense month in the program to date. France’s CTC mandate went fully live in September — the first post-live analysis is now available. Fonoa closed the largest funding round in indirect tax software history and acquired PwC’s platform in May, but the integration story is only now landing in the market. Orbitax shipped GIR amendment tooling in September, directly responding to what 1,700+ live filings revealed about the complexity of the first Pillar Two cycle. And the UAE’s October 30 ASP appointment deadline makes this the last actionable window before the January 2027 enforcement date. The four weeks are structured to carry all of this — market consolidation and its implications, the live e-invoicing operating reality, the post-filing direct tax landscape, and a synthesis capstone.
