The Nexus is Back!
Well the newsletter never really went away, whereas I did, braving the airport EES queus and summer hoards in order to escape the relentless heat in the UK!
Now that I’m back, I’m heads down for the next few weeks working on some great new content for the newsletter, think interviews, event reports, wrapping up the VAT challenger series and starting analysis on the next market segment (TBD).
For now, it’s your final chance to register for the 10th annual strategic indirect tax and vat management summit (Use NEXUSTAXTECHNOLOGY10 for a 10% discount) I’d love to see you there next week.
In this week’s issue we have a refreshed learning plan, new October events, some great jobs as ever and we’re continuing the SAP theme with a look at Taxera, another specialist betting the farm on capturing part of the S4/Hana wave. Enjoy.
⭐ Vendor Spotlight: Taxera
Taxera: The SAP-Native Specialist Betting Everything on One ERP.
SAP shops staring down Poland’s KSeF mandate and Germany’s 2027 e-invoicing rollout don’t want a bolt-on suite — they want something that already lives inside SAP BTP. Taxera is betting its whole existence on being that tool, and the SAP relationship checks out; whether the company behind it does is a separate, live question.
WHAT TAXERA ACTUALLY IS
Taxera is a Swiss platform built natively on SAP BTP in the ABAP environment — SAF-T, VAT/GST returns, Intrastat/EC listings, and e-invoicing/CTC across five “hubs” on one SAP-connected data layer. Its centre of gravity is Europe: real depth in Romania, Poland, Italy, Germany, and France, with no US sales-and-use-tax capability. No non-SAP integration, no self-serve tier, no published pricing — every deal starts with an existing SAP estate. Headcount sits around 24 (Tracxn, April 2026), unfunded, revenue estimated well under $2M ARR. The longlist buyer: a SAP S/4HANA manufacturer or distributor already exposed to SAF-T or CTC mandates who wants a specialist inside their ERP.
WHERE IT BEATS THE MARKET BASELINE
Taxera clears the baseline in one place, but convincingly: SAP-native integration, backed by a live SAP partner-directory listing and a dedicated S/4HANA track — evidence most vendors gesture at and Taxera can actually show. SAF-T is the other real strength: a dedicated product, a named regional partner (Balkan Services), and a live Romania mandate, beyond a generic checkbox claim. The Amadeus distribution deal (2024) is an unusually strong third-party proof point for a 24-person company. Below baseline: the map claims 135+ countries tracked, but only five carry a published brief; the ISO 27001/GDPR claim traces to a vendor-submitted aggregator listing with no checkable certificate; and there’s zero integration outside SAP.
PORTFOLIO ANALYSIS
No acquisition story — Taxera has grown by adding hubs organically, tracking with an unfunded balance sheet. Less clean: the entity has been renamed three times since 2018 (BlueVale Consulting → Avanda → Kanuni Technologies → Taxera), with a governance change as recently as February 2026. Reporting (SAF-T, VAT/GST, Intrastat) is estimated to drive ~40% of revenue, E-Invoicing/CTC another ~30% — effectively the whole business, with Calculation, Managed Services, and AI near-zero. The read for operators: a two-product company wrapped in a five-hub UI, and the governance instability is a diligence question, not a footnote.
SEGMENT, DELIVERY MODEL, AND SIZE BAND FITS
Segment archetype fit
● B2B goods: 2 – Good fit — SAP-native SAF-T/VAT/Intrastat reporting maps onto manufacturing and distribution flows.
● B2C goods: 0 – Poor fit — no e-commerce or marketplace connector; SAP-only excludes most retail stacks.
● B2B/B2C digital services: 1 – Patchy fit — e-invoicing/CTC tracking is relevant, but no OSS/IOSS-specific depth.
● B2B/B2C services (non-digital): 0 – Poor fit — no service-industry content or workflow evidenced.
Delivery model fit
● Software-only: 2 – Good fit — genuinely software, not a BPO — though 24 people raises support-capacity questions.
● Software + managed services: 1 – Patchy fit — “Compliance as a Service” language exists, but no evidence of direct delivery.
● Managed services-led: 0 – Poor fit — not the delivery DNA — no BPO-style model found.
● Marketplace / self-serve: 0 – Poor fit — no signup, no pricing, no free trial.
● White-label / OEM: 1 – Patchy fit — the Amadeus deal reads as embedded distribution, but it’s one relationship.
Size band fit
● Small: 0 – Poor fit — no pricing, no self-serve, dependent on a SAP estate small buyers rarely run.
● Medium: 1 – Patchy fit — real SAP depth, offset by a young roadmap and a small delivery team.
● Large: 2 – Good fit — the right shape for multi-entity SAP landscapes — execution capacity is genuinely open.
CUSTOMER AND EMPLOYEE SENTIMENTS
Essentially no customer sentiment to report — no G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, TrustRadius, or Gartner Peer Insights profile beyond a seller-submitted G2 listing with zero reviews. Consistent with a small, direct-sales vendor, not necessarily a red flag alone. Employee sentiment is thinner in volume, sharper in substance.
● G2 / Gartner / Capterra / TrustRadius / Trustpilot: no material profile anywhere.
● Glassdoor (2 reviews): predominantly negative — unstructured management, disputed bonus payments, a customer count reviewers say sits below public claims. Single-source, unverified.
● RepVue / Indeed: no data, unsurprising at this headcount.
● LinkedIn: ~1,221 followers; actively hiring SAP engineers despite the negative Glassdoor signal.
With an n of 2, this isn’t a reliable culture read — but the customer-count allegation is exactly what a reference call should settle first.
IF YOU’RE EVALUATING TAXERA — HERE’S THE READ
For buyers
If you’re Large, B2B goods, running SAP across multiple EU entities with SAF-T or CTC exposure in Romania, Poland, or similar markets, Taxera belongs on a shortlist — but budget time for reference calls, not just a demo. If Medium and SAP-based, the integration depth is real; treat this as an early-adopter bet and verify support capacity first. If you’re not on SAP, skip this one — no Oracle, Dynamics, or e-commerce connector exists, evidenced or roadmapped. If Small, this isn’t built for you. Whatever your size: don’t sign before Taxera gives you a verifiable ISO 27001 certificate number and two live references — the gap between claimed and checkable is the biggest open question here.
For prospective employees
● Good move if you’re an SAP ABAP/BTP engineer wanting focused platform work — the company is actively hiring for exactly these roles.
● Worth a look if you’re a tax content specialist drawn to SAF-T/CTC depth in specific European markets, even if coverage is narrow.
● Ask hard questions in any commercial role: the only public employee testimony alleges disputed bonuses and a low customer count — get specifics before signing.
● Higher-risk if stability matters: three entity renames, no external funding, and a February 2026 governance change form a pattern worth asking about.
