🤷♂️ TL;DR Vote on next group of profiles 175 Jobs, 16 events, 4:52 hours of learning and 1 vendor spotlight (Thomson Reuters).
It’s 3 weeks in now and I’m getting into the rhythm of writing and promoting a weekly newsletter, I really hope you are finding it useful and please do share any feedback or ideas.
I started off in familiar territory, profiling the companies I’ve worked for and competed with over the years, like Avalara, Sovos and now Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE (you can probably work out who’s next after that too!). But now the next stage begins as I dig in to new areas (for me at least) of the market, and there are options of which way to turn next…
VAT challengers (Fonoa, VATCalc, Taxually etc)
AI Native players (Kintsugi, Sphere, Numeral)
Einvoicing platforms (Basware, Edicom, RTC)
SAP Add-ons (KGT, ITL, SOVOS TLI)
Direct tax platforms (ONESOURCE, TaxSystems, Orbitax, Longview)
I’d love your input on this, so please take a moment to click below!
Thanks as always for taking the time to read, now onto the issue itself ✌
🐱👤 Vendor Spotlight -Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE
ONESOURCE Indirect Tax: Enterprise-Grade Depth and Institutional Ecosystem — With the Complexity to Match
Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE Indirect Tax isn’t chasing the API-native disruptor hype. It’s the embedded tax engine large SAP-heavy enterprises lean on when multi-country VAT, volumetric excise and Superfund rules demand institutional-grade depth — especially now as CTC mandates force multinationals to rethink embedded compliance.
What ONESOURCE actually is
ONESOURCE delivers global VAT/GST/sales use tax determination, returns/reporting, e-invoicing/CTC via Pagero (80 mandate countries), managed filing services, nexus intelligence, special regimes (fuels/Superfund standout), embedded workflows, and deep ERP integrations. Core regimes span 205 countries/territories with SAP S4HANA as the gravitational centre — Endorsed App across three solutions. Public sources peg Thomson Reuters Corporates (ONESOURCE home) at ~1,844M FY2024 revenue, with indirect tax estimated at 244–314M (central 275M; Calculation 45–55%, Pagero CTC 30–40%). Longlist this if you’re a large B2B goods/services multinational with SAP/multi-ERP sprawl and regulated verticals — not for nimble digital natives.
Where it beats the market baseline
Against indirect tax table stakes, ONESOURCE clears the bar decisively on calculation depth — global engine handles exemptions, VAT grouping, and niche Superfund/excise no peer matches — plus SAP-embedded integration that’s repeatedly the deal-clincher in enterprise reviews. The CIP ecosystem is an unmatched structural moat, turning Big 4 into a distribution flywheel other vendors’ partner programmes feel like checkboxes. Pagero vaults e-invoicing/CTC above baseline (IDC Leader), with Deloitte now running managed services on the stack. It’s merely adequate on UX (steep curves, specialist-only) and nascent on AI (no copilots/agentic yet), while pricing opacity trails transparent alternatives.
Portfolio analysis
Pagero’s 2024 bolt-on (~103M partial-year) flipped the mix: e-invoicing/CTC now rivals legacy calculation as top revenue driver, overtaking returns and pushing intelligence/special regimes to tail-end. Sabrix heritage built the determination core (2009 acquisition), with E-Invoicing launch (2023) and edge-POS (2024) layering modern delivery — but patching demands full regression tests per fix, baking ops burden into every update. Architecture is ERP-first, not API-native: upstream determination feeds Pagero cleanly on paper, but reviews flag Oracle Fusion liaison friction. Net: broad, acquisition-tested portfolio where investment flows to CTC growth, but diligence architecture silos — you’re buying connected suite or vendor-branded point tools?
Business model and size band fits
Business model fit
B2B goods: 3 – Strong fit; VAT/exemptions/SAP + CTC for complex chains.
B2C goods: 2 – Good fit; enterprise-scale POS/VAT, overkill for domestic/simple e-comm.
B2B/B2C digital services: 2 – Good fit; OSS/place-of-supply workable, not subscription-native.
B2B/B2C services: 3 – Strong fit; multi-office VAT + services align cleanly.
Size band fit
Small: 1 – Partial fit; impl cost/complexity prohibitive sans exceptional needs.
Medium: 2 – Good fit; upper mid-market multi-VAT/ERP justifies if governed tightly.
Large: 3 – Strong fit; SAP/multi-entity natural habitat, CIP de-risks scale.
Customer and employee sentiments
Customers split two-tier: G2/Gartner ~3.8–4.0/5 (800+ reviews) praise integration (9.0/10), analytics (9.0), ERP depth for enterprise; Capterra/TrustRadius dip to 3.5/5 (50–100 reviews) on helpdesk delays, patching burden, form lags. AWS flags SMB cost-prohibitive. Headline: experts love depth, mid-market hates friction — confirms large-enterprise ICP.
Employees: Glassdoor 4.0/5 (14k+ corp-wide) lauds WLB/peers (4.0), 76% recommend; Indeed ~3.8/5 steady but bureaucratic. RepVue 78.5/100 (631 ratings): quota 47% (strong), PMF 4.1/5 (top), culture 3.0/5 (bottom-half). Implication: stable institutional talent for domain work, but sales/GTM lean — buyers get continuity via CIP, not direct org depth.
For prospective buyers
If you’re Large SAP-centric B2B goods/services with 20+ VAT jurisdictions and fuels/Superfund exposure, ONESOURCE is shortlist-essential — pair with Deloitte/KPMG for de-risked implementation, but contract patching SLAs, Pagero integration proofs, and renewal caps (RepVue flags price exodus). Medium upper-mid with multi-country VAT/ERP? Viable if you govern like enterprise — benchmark TCO vs lighter stacks, negotiate entity/module flexibility. Digital-first SaaS or small/lean? Pass — complexity/cost outweighs baseline calc/VAT; API-natives win on velocity/TCO. Overall, diligence Big 4 relationships as moat, but probe AI/roadmap vs stagnant G2 direction (5.8/10) — this is enduring infrastructure, not disruption.
For prospective employees
Thrive as tax content/SME: unmatched domain depth (200+ countries), Big 4 adjacency builds credebility and path.
Good for platform engineers: untangle ERP/CTC plumbing, stable corporation vs PE churn.
Risky for sales (AE/BDR): 47% quota solid but territory variance, comp cuts frustrate.
Mixed CSM/post-sales: enterprise wins complex; mid-market exposed to support gaps.
Neutral career play: brand/WLB pull strong, but promo slowness/offshoring push high performers out.
