đ¤ˇââď¸ TL;DR AI announcements reviewed, 141 Jobs, 18 events, 4:15 hours of learning and 1 vendor spotlight (Avalara).
So into the 2nd week of The Nexus, Iâm preparing the next couple issues in advance as I have an upcoming holiday (not the best timing for a launch I know đ) so not much time to consume content but something that caught my attention was the AI race heating up amongst the big platforms with Avalara, Sovos and Vertex all hyping up âmajorâ upgrades to their capabilities.
The cynic in me thinks this is a collective (and kinda slow) response to the âsaaspocalypseâ announcements of late January (just in time for Anthropicâs latest drop âMythosâ đ ). Undoubtedly all of the big players are facing valuation shock, with 2 publicly traded (TRI and VERX stock both down around 20% & 30% respectively since end of January) and 2 PE owned and close to their backers exit windows, coupled with the slew of âAI nativeâ US startups chomping up domestic market share, the pressure must be realâŚ
Looking into the details themselves, the announcements are generally rather flimsy, Avalara and Sovos updates are mostly a roll-up of previous PRâs, whereas Vertex is sharing new (albeit somewhat underwhelming) detail.
On the face of it, I would say Avalara is probably the broadest and most interesting set of use cases across the portfolio (MCP, onboarding, einvoice data mapping), Sovos gives some nice visualisations (e.g. charts and reconciliations) and is more VAT centric đ and Vertex is lagging the pack, however Iâll be waiting for some external validation and real world detail to back up the marketing hype and glossy videos before making my mind up, one to come back to later on for sure!
And, finally, if youâre interested in a builderâs perspective of AI in tax tech, you could also do much worse than read this insightful article by Diyan Mihaylov at Uber.
Now onto the Issue itself â
đąâđ¤ Vendor Spotlight
AVALARA: BREADTH OVER SPECIALISATIONâAND WHETHER THATâS ENOUGH
The category leader in US sales tax integration is at a crossroads: post-PE restructuring signals maturity and the Versori acquisition signals renewed ambition, but support quality has visibly deteriorated for many buyers. The question isnât whether Avalara worksâit does, at scale, in certain placesâbut whether you can afford the renewal pricing, workarounds and customer experience variance.
What Avalara Actually Is
Avalara is the market default for cloud-based US sales tax compliance, anchored by AvaTax (determination, 50â60% of revenue) and CertCapture (exemption certificate management, 12â18% of revenue). The company also delivers automated multi-state returns filing, VAT/GST calculation and reporting across 75+ countries, emerging e-invoicing capability and managed services for lean tax teams. The core go-to-market centre of gravity is unmatched ERP integration breadth (1,200+ connectors across SAP, NetSuite, Oracle, Dynamics, Shopify, and billing platforms). Avalara is privately held by Vista Equity Partners (November 2022 acquisition) with a $500M BlackRock co-investment (November 2025) signalling an exit within 12â24 months. The company operates globally across 75+ countries with an estimated 4,500â4,850 employees and directional TTM revenue of $1,350Mâ$1,400M (2026).
Where It Beats the Market Baseline
Avalaraâs integration ecosystem is unmatched: 1,200+ pre-built connectors deliver breadth that category competitors donât match, particularly for ERP-centric multinationals and e-commerce platforms. Address-level US sales tax accuracy is table-stakes quality, but Avalara owns the market standard. The companyâs November 2025 Avi agentic platform and August 2025 property tax managed services launch signal genuine ambition in AI-driven automation, though execution remains unproven. On the downside, international VAT and e-invoicing capabilities are adequate but not specialisedââdecent for basic scenariosâ is the reviewer consensus. Connector quality is also uneven: while tier-1 systems (NetSuite, Shopify) receive premium support, long-tail integrations and QuickBooks Online (flagged for transaction overcounting) have documented quality issues. The company is at or below baseline on developer experience (not API-first architecture) and pricing transparency (sales-led, renewal escalation uncapped by default).
Portfolio Shape: Acquisition-Light, Organic Growth
Unlike acquisition-hungry peers, Avalara post-Vista has pursued selective, capability-focused acquisition (i.e. Versori, the Manchester-based AI-native integration platform, March 2026) and organic product expansion. The Versori move is strategic: it signals recognition that manually managing 1,200 individual connectors is not scalable and deepens AI capability. Revenue concentration in US sales tax (AvaTax + Returns + CertCapture ~75â90% of indirect tax revenue) is both a moat and a constraint; growth and differentiation now depend on e-invoicing/CTC traction, international expansion, and agentic AI delivery. The portfolio is broad but not seamlessly integratedâit feels like a collection of strong point solutions bolted together, not a unified, single-codebase platform. That architectural reality will matter for large implementations.
Fit Across Business Models and Size
Business models:
â B2B goods: 3 -- Strong (US) fit; multi-state exemption handling and ERP integration align well with distributed supply chains.
â B2C goods (e-commerce): 3 -- Strong fit; Shopify/BigCommerce/WooCommerce dominance is unmatched.
â B2B/B2C digital services: 2 -- Good fit; place-of-supply VAT logic functional but not API-first.
â B2B/B2C services: 2 -- Good fit; multi-office reporting handled well.
Size bands:
â Small (<50 EE): 1 -- Patchy fit; pricing and support model optimise for mid-market/large; SMB experiences escalation and support queue delays.
â Medium (50â500 EE): 3 -- Strong fit; this is the sweet spot for multi-state US + light international + ERP integration.
â Large (500+ EE, typically international): 3 -- Strong fit; integration breadth and dedicated account support justify the fit, but contract governance is essential.
Customer Sentiment: A Tale of Two Experiences
Large accounts (G2: 4.0â4.1/5.0; Gartner Peer Insights: 4.2/5.0) praise integration breadth and US tax accuracy; mid-market and SMB reviewers (Capterra/GetApp: 3.8/5.0; BBB: low, with dozens of complaints) describe support queue delays, billing disputes, and difficult escalation. This isnât random varianceâitâs structural. Avalara operates a two-tier support model: customers with Technical Account Manager (TAM) access receive responsive, knowledgeable support; customers without it enter a shared queue that reviewers consistently rate as inaccessible. Renewal pricing escalation without capping, automatic renewal clauses, and transaction-definition disputes are documented across all SMB and mid-market platforms. Support quality divergence directly correlates with account value; this is intentional commercial architecture.
Employee sentiment:
â Glassdoor: 3.3/5.0 (down 5% YoY); pre-Vista culture was mission-driven; post-Vista shift toward cost discipline includes layoffs, offshoring, and low job security perception.
â RepVue: 81.44/100 (rank #991 of software orgs); AE quota attainment 41%; culture/leadership 3.2/5.0 (bottom 10% of software companies); future outlook 2.7/5.0 (neutral).
â Engineering profiles rate higher (4.0/5.0) than company average, suggesting engineering is a relative strength; GTM and customer success roles are strained by post-Vista restructuring and high churn. Account manager turnover creates continuity risk for customer relationships at renewal time.
If Youâre Considering Avalara...
For large, multi-national B2B or B2C goods companies managing multi-state US compliance and global VAT: Avalara is a defensible strategic partner. Shortlist it, but conduct diligence on product use-case/country coverage, associated support SLAs, TAM availability, renewal escalation caps, and integration performance for non-tier-1 systems. Begin renewal negotiations 6+ months early; use competitor quotes as leverage.
For mid-market firms (100â1,000 EE): Avalara is credible but requires active management. Pricing escalation at renewal is a known risk; the fit is good for complexity (multi-state, ERP-integrated workflows) but TCO surprise is real. Avoid multi-year contracts without escalation caps. Clarify backfiling costs and state registration fees upfront.
For small businesses or e-commerce brands: Evaluate lighter alternatives (simpler pricing, no transaction overages, faster implementation). If you choose Avalara, negotiate hard on pricing transparency and build strong termination rights into your contract. Test QuickBooks Online integration efficiency before committing at scale.
For regulated verticals, specialist tax regimes or EU VAT specialists: Proceed with caution. Avalaraâs coverage is broad but not deep in niche areas; plan for a TAM or specialist consulting engagement to cover gaps.
For prospective employees:
â Tax content specialists and platform engineers working on complex, acquisition-heavy stacks will find genuine domain depth and interesting technical problems. Engineering culture is materially stronger than company average.
â Sales and customer success roles carry execution risk: quota attainment is at-market (41%), rep turnover is high, and account ownership instability is documented. The sales org is reactive-hiring mode to fix support gaps, creating misaligned incentives.
â Post-Vista cost discipline is real; the PE exit within 12â24 months likely perpetuates margin focus rather than investment in employee experience or GTM stability. Career upside is real for performers in strong roles (Premier partner SEs, senior tax architects) but job security perception is low across the company.
